Taking advantage of the previous day’s downpour, six paddlers ventured to the upper section of Antietam Creek on 7/22/2018: Barb B, John S, Larry L, Mark B Tim T and Wayne McD. We put in at Wagamore Rd to shorten the trip by three miles. Skies threatened but no rain until driving away from the takeout. The Sharpsburg gauge was at 4.1’ and dropping slightly when we scheduled the trip at 8:30 AM. But then it rebounded and was cresting at 4.9’ as we put in at noon. Whoa! But no carnage or even near misses. The three main rapids were turbulent, many of the lesser rapids were partially washed out. One downside was that the river was full of debris (plastic cups, bottles, etc) no doubt washed in by the previous day’s storm. We spotted one bald eagle.
