Trip Reports

Lower Yough Oct 21
Author Last Post

Lower Youghiogheny, PA -- October 21: Level was 2.1 feet (medium). We had 6 paddlers (Tom Hackman, Ross, Jake, Marc, Matt, and David), four in kayaks and two in open canoes. Weather was about 50 degrees and dry. Throughout the Loop section just below the put-in in Ohiopyle, we enjoyed catching surf waves and eddies, and experimenting with boofs. At Dimple rapid, we came across a sizable group from the Johns Hopkins University outing club. We spent a while surfing at Swimmers wave. We had a few brief swims, especially when the canoeists tried to surf, but no carnage to write home about. At the last rapid, Bruner Run, we tried some nice slot moves on the left side. Two of us were having so much fun we ran the Loop again. A fine fall day on the Yough.
