Trip Reports

Staircase, April 4th, 4.0 feet
Author Last Post

Eleven enthusiastic paddlers came out to enjoy a perfect, sunny Spring day on the Staircase. They were Mark B, Larry L, Lou C, Lisa L, Lisa F, Dan M, John E, Bruce C, Sean C, and trip leaders Kim B and Jenny T. There were no unexpected incidents (only one exploratory oops). There was lots of surfing as should be expected at a level of 4.0 feet. We prevented a goose attack by moving our lunch spot downstream of the old mill site on the left channel below Bulls Tail. Near the end of the run, roughly half of the folks took the center ‘100 yard dash’ and discovered a ‘sweet’ wave train there. The tour through the heron rookery revealed many unoccupied nests, with a few occupied by either Great Blue Herons or Great White Egrets. Perhaps a new, active eagle’s nest close by forced some herons to move to a safer place this year. The take-out walk to Weverton seemed shorter than remembered. All in all it was a fun, lively day with folks glad to be out with friends on a fun river.
