Patowmack Canal December 10, 2020.

Paddlers were Gary and Ginny, Hendrik, Jackie and Barb Level 3.8 feet at LF. We explored the entire bypass created by George Washington in 1792 starting from the sluice that reappeared after Dam #2 was destroyed, through the bypass along Lowe's (Calleva's Island), across the paddler's channel above Diagonal Rapid and a right turn into the stone walled dredged channel. The bypass ended about 2 miles downstream when it junctioned with the main river along the Virginia shore opposite Elm Island. I have been paddling the GW since the 60's but this is the first time I followed the Patowmack Canal's bypass to it's junction with the river. It was beautiful ...and exciting to be part of history and to have a PFD. Several members have been making an exhaustive historical research project trying to find the details of this construction.

Pictures are on CCA's Facebook. Enjoy!
