Trip Reports

George Washington Canal - 26, July 2020
Author Last Post

First group was actually 7 and included Sam Mazur, paddling a new-to-him kayak. He was brave to paddle with 6 OC-1ers.

We met in the parking lot of Violette's Lock at 8:30 in an effort to have a better chance at securing parking.  Level: 3.2 ft.  When we finally all got out on the water we were 17 boats with a combination of kayaks, duckies, OC-1s, and an SUP.  Therefore, we attempted to divide out into smaller groups.  Having identified 6 participants (Tim, Ginny, Gary, 2 Bobs, and newcomer Ryan) who prefer to "play through" without surfing every rapid and hole, we sent the open boaters on in the first wave of our Sunday assault on the GW Canal.  This left this trip coordinator with 11 participants, until newcomer Tony showed up in his ducky.  Faced with 12 boaters, I consulted my Senior Trip Coordinator Advisors (Alf and Gus) and we agreed to split this remaining group.  Alf and Gus tried to entice paddlers to join them in crossing the Potomac, but were apparently not very persuasive, as they were only joined by Gordy.  Having whittled the group down to 9 we set off as a third wave across the Potomac and toward the GW Canal.  The Trip Coordinator deftly shepherded her charges down the GW Canal with the assistance of Barb and Kathleen. With only one swim, and a heart-warming hummingbird rescue, the Trip Coordinator pronounces this trip to be A Magnificent Success.  We met up with members of our second wave (Gordy, Gus, and Alf) at the last rapid, where they had apparently been waiting hours.  Five of us (Gus, Kathleen, Barb, Gordy and myself) attempted an attainment up Seneca Breaks with only Barb and Kathleen making the ascent.  Gus, being hampered by the Trip Coordinator, opted to paddle back down the Maryland side with Gordy and I, introducing me to some excellent rapids to play in.  We arrived back at the parking lot around 12:45, hot and tired, and having seen several turtles in the canal (unsure why Alf only found 1) [I found 2: Alf] .  Barb and Kathleen arrived back at Violette's around 1:00 fresh as daisies asking if anyone wanted to run the canal again, but we all needed to leave for lunch by then.
