Goose Creek - Pickup Trip
About this event
Goose Creek in Ashburn/Leesburg, Loudoun County, Virginia.
I've been watching the gauge and predictions all week, and it looks like we should have enough water to run this creek Saturday morning.
Overview from American Whitewater: Since 2018, local paddlers put in at Sycolin Road (SR 643) Bridge (limited parking here) and do a 5.3 mile run to Riverpoint Drive Trailhead (formerly known as Kephart Bridge Landing), itself 1 mile upstream of the Potomac. From Sycolin Road paddle 1.4 miles down the reservoir, portage right around the 20-foot dam and descend three easy Cl. 1+ rapids and rock-gardens for 1.2 miles to the Washington and Old Dominion bike trail bridge and Sycolin Creek confluence. From here it's 1.4 miles past Cookes Mill/Golfcourse Rapid (Cl. II+, III) to Keep Loudoun Beautiful Park just above VA Rte 7. Another 1.3 miles to Clapham Falls Rapid and the Riverpoint Drive Trailhead take-out.
The gauge is predicted to be at 3.1 at 8:00 AM Saturday morning. However, predictions for this creek are notorious for being erroneously optimistic. If the gauge drops below 2.5 I'll probably scrub the trip, so check your email before leaving the house Saturday morning.
If you'd like to join this trip please email me at white.pamela@gmail.com so I know to expect you (and let you know if the gauge lets us down). We'll be meeting at Riverpoint Drive Trailhead at [43942 Riverpoint Drive, Sterling (39.0978, -77.4972)] 10:00 AM to set shuttle to the put-in on Sycolin Road. You can also reach me on my cell at 5seven1-2one6-4two9zero.
