It rained on the drive to the meetup but stopped just before unloading boats and getting ready for the river. Before unloading, we evaluated the C&O canal's water levels and decided that we could still run the loop for a last time this year, as it is in the process of being drained early this year. Future trips will have to run the shuttle rather than paddle the loop. This also means that the planned steps at Blockhouse entry point will not be used until next Spring.
Participants of the trip were 6 kayakers and 1 inflatable paddler. We were Wayne McD, Barb Brown, Diane H, Marty K, Andrew T, Bruce C and trip coordinator (TC) Hildy F. All, except Marty, were paddling in a hardshell kayak.
There is no incident to report – all paddled well at 2.6 water level. We were able to paddle the C&O canal to the takeout in shallow water but only with difficulties. The air and water temperature were pleasant. The turtle count was 6 including a snap turtle. Paw Paw season was over – none was found, but some of us did partake on persimmons in the C&O canal. Delicious!
