On a cloudy, but humid, day 13 paddlers (Barb B, Bob H, Gary & Ginny Q, James B, Jen S, Lisa L, Louise S, Marty L, Rich C, Robert R, Sandy W & Wayne McD) ran the George Washington Canal yet again at 2.77’ (1770 cfs). At this low level Diagonal rapid has become decidedly scrapey and this was further complicated by the presence of a small log in the middle of the rapid. One kayaker collided with the log and capsized. On the plus side, the collision bounced the log out of the rapid and downstream on to the riverbank where it could do no further harm – well done, capsizer!
Other than that, the run was pretty straightforward. We paddled as a single group since the inveterate surfers were reasonably moderate in the time spent at each rapid. There was rain off and on driving both to and from the river but not a drop fell while we were paddling thanks to the hard work of the trip coordinator.
