Trip Reports

August 2, 2026 - George Washungton Canl @ 2.77'...

We had 13 paddlers - Denise C, Gary & Ginny Q, Hendrik vO, John L (PFD), Kristen F-F, Lisa L, Mark W, Rich C, Robin W, Tim T and Wayne McD – brave the elements and paddle the George Washington Canal under gray skies and occasional showers. The level was a scrapey 2.77’ (1770 cfs). We began as a single group but it quickly became apparent that some were more devoted to surfing while others wanted to get the heck off the river before the weather worsened. So we divided into two at Surfer’s Ledge and proceeded without incident. The branch obstructing Jacuzzi Rapid has now been removed. At Exit Rapid, we spotted a pair of bald eagles, the highlight of the day for at least one paddler. Turtle count of the C&O Canal was a grand total of one. The trip leader was awarded a grudging C+ for the weather – hey, at least it wasn’t hot.
