GW Canal 26 July Trip Report

A level of 2.9’ on the Little Falls gauge and an air temp of 80s brought out a max crowd. Last week we had eleven, while this week we had a cast of thousands, well, not quite. The final number was 23. Twenty-three is not the most for a trip but rather three standard deviations above the norm. Parking was at a premium: One fellow paddled down from Riley’s. A couple dropped their boats then drove up to Riley’s and walked down.

As to paddlers: In OC1s were Rich C, Ginny and Gary Q, Max K, and the Trip Coordinator. In K1s we had Barb B, Robin W, Toni B, Denise C, Mary T, Sean R, Sandy W, Wayne M, Kathleen S, “Mickey B” (Michale Baummer), Leonardo L, “Cotton” (David Cottingham), Dominque T, Ken W, Jason F, Gregory L, Dmitry D. And in a pack raft we had Steve C.

We split into two groups with Cotton graciously leading the first group. Some folks decided the fast group was too fast and dropped back into the slow group. Friend Tony was at the surfing wave. Cotton’s group reported some excitement. In the second group, three paddlers ran the traditional route through Jacuzzi rapids. Then a smallish branch fell into it from a nearby log. So, Barb, Max and Steve pulled the branch out. Then Max and Leonardo pulled the entire log off the rock and got it to shore.

At the take out, everyone was helpful getting boats up to the canal. We all look forward to John Snitzer’s stone steps.

Kathleen reported a turtle count of 5.
