18 paddlers (Alf C, Andrew T, Barb B, Bob H, Bobby M{PFD}, Danny R, Dean H, Denise C, Dmitri D, Gary & Ginny Q, Greg L, Kathleen S, Lisa L, Robert, Trey{PFD}, Tim T & Wayne McD) opted to mimic ‘mad dogs and Englishmen’ and paddled the George Washington Canal on a brutally hot day. Our party included two Personal First Descents who paddled the canal without difficulty. The river continues to be on the low and scrapey side - 2.83’ (2,030 cfs) on the Little Falls gauge. More distressing than that, however, was the widespread fishkill. We observed dozens of fish floating on the surface of the river and stranded on the banks. We attributed that to the heat - water temperature on the Potomac was 93℉, more like a sauna than a river. Despite the travails, all made it safely back to the Violettes Lock takeout.
