Trip Reports

GW Canal - October 19 at 2.68 ft
Author Last Post

We had 16 paddlers participate on this Sunday morning run on the Potomac River/GW Canal from our put in at Violettes Lock, to our takeout at Violettes Lock (the classic Violettes Lock Loop). After launching, we met in the pool in front of the lock for our trip briefing. It was a gorgeous fall day with temps in the low to mid 60s. The water level was at a very boney 2.68 ft according to the LF gauge, and the discharge was about 1,480 cfs. The water temperature was in the low 60s. We could not have asked for a more perfect day, or a better-looking group of paddlers. The group consisted of Andrew T., Diane H., Alf C., Sandra W., Hendrik V., Dan K., Dan?, Lindsey?, Michael B., Gary S., Leonardo L., Jennifer S., Natalie H., George F., James B., and me serving as the Trip Coordinator.

Once we completed our introductions and our animated discussion on what toppings DO NOT belong on a pizza, we broke into 2 groups: the “direct” group (the faster of the two) led by Hendrik, and the “goof off” group led by the TC. With boats strapped to our butts, paddles in hand, and a song in our hearts, we departed in earnest to cross the Potomac River by about 10:45 and then began our trek down the GW canal. The direct Group opted to take the “Jaccuzi” route, and the Goof Off group opted for the alternate route in search of some good attaining practice.

In terms of statistics, we had

- 16 happy paddlers

- Water level = 2.68 ft

- CFS = 1,480

- Temp mid 60s

- 2 PFDs

- 3 out of boat experiences

- 0 injuries (except for 3 egos that were slightly bruised)

- And a total of 23 turtles observed on the C&O canal while heading back up to Violettes Lock.

We’ll call it a pretty good day 😊
