Trip Reports

George Washington Canal on August 31
Author Last Post

In the best movie ever made, Casablanca, Captain Renault says “round up the usual suspects”. Well. that is an apt description of the trip today to the George Washington Canal.  We had Barb B, Mickey B, Toni B, Alf C, Dmitry D, Diane H, Bob H, Wayne M, Neal N, Sharon O, Ginny and Gary Q, John S, Jim S, Andrew T, Hendrik vO, and your faithful scribe Tim T. To add some spice to the mix, John Ritchie from Chula Vista CA was along. He keeps a boat with his sister in PA and joins us occasionally. Interestingly, Hendrik had volunteered to “coordinate” a group using Pennyfield with a shuttle to Riley’s. But he had no takers!

The level was 2.8, so lots of rocks. We did attract some attention from local law enforcement while crossing. Arriving at the canal, we split into two groups, the “fast group” and the “play group” Surprisingly we had 10 boats for the fast group. Apparently, many folks were playing hookey for the day and needed to get home for chores and other things. The "play group" had 8 paddlers, surfed and practiced rolls. Mostly an uneventful run with beautiful temperatures, high sunshine and low humidity. Turtle count was 6.
