Swiftwater Rescue Practice Series
Timothy Lapham

Wed June 18 was very rainy, but we had a successful Swiftwater Rescue Practice Session. We had a very small but dedicated crew (thanks Francois!). We took a land-based approach to the Offutt Waves. The topic of the day was rescue wading, and there was so much rain, that during a creek crossing on the approach, we got an early start to our wading practice! (A creek crossing that should have been ankle deep was thigh deep.) The Little Falls Gauge was at 5.9 and rising fast, so we stuck pretty close to shore. We practiced single-person wading, with and without paddle assist, two-person wading, team wading, and wading for rescuing a non-walking victim. We spent two hours on the water, being rained on most of the time, but the sun came out just as we were leaving.
