Trip Reports

Sunday 17 Nov - GW Canal - 2.85 ft - 16 Boaters
Alford Cooley

In what is probably our last Violettes Lock Loop trip this year (the C&O Canal will be drained tomorrow), 16 paddlers set out on the Potomac - 6 in canoes, 10 in kayaks. Gray day, 56 degree air, 52 degree water - no wind. A small swifter contingent led by canoeists Wayne MacDaniel, Tim Tilson, and Hendrik Van Oss took off first, sedately followed by Alan Gale, John Snitzer, Gary & Ginny Quam, Barb Brown, Miki Komlosh, Dmitry Didenkoff, Kathleen Sengstock, Natalie Hanno, Rich Conde, Lisa Laden, Robert Ristow, and Alf Cooley. Four boaters checked out the far right channel after Diagonal Rapid and report that the Left and the new Left Left Channels are superior. They picked up another kayak paddle left over from the 10-boat shipwreck of Oct 6, which we'll return to its owner. John Snitzer reports: Below Diagonal Rapids, a few of us went down the right channel, now available via a twisty chute against the right bank. The entangled green canoe remains entangled. We found and retrieved a breakdown kayak paddle. This was the first time I've been down that route (Jacuzzi Rapid) in years, and I can't remember why it was the standard route before the big logjam years ago. Both left and left-left channels have more to offer. Curiosity satisfied. JS
