Kellys Ford -(Rappahannock @ Remington) @ 4.35'...
Wayne McDaniel

18 paddlers – Alan G(PFD), Alf C, Dean H(PFD), Diane H(PFD), Dorothy S(PFD), Gordy L(PFD), Hildy F(PFD), Jim L, John S, Natalie H(PFD), Nienke S(PFD), Rich C, Stin L, Susie(PFD), Tim T, Tina S(PFD), Toni B & Wayne McD enjoyed a sunny, mild day on the Remington section of the Rappahannock. Of this number, I believe that 10(!) were PFDs (Personal First Descents). In a perhaps not entirely unrelated data point we had four capsizes. To the best of my recollection (and I’m sure that Alf will fact check me on this - I agree, Alf) that’s a record number of capsizes for the Sunday paddles. So, for those of you who participated, congratulations on being part of a record-setting endeavor. Interestingly, all four capsizes were at Sandy Beach rapid, while there were none at Piggly-Wiggly rapid (which, in my mind at least, is more difficult). The level was a sporting 4.35’ (866cfs). We were escorted down the river by several great blue herons. Another wildlife sighting was a large turtle sunning on the bank that had some of us thinking of terrapin soup. The takeout is at a wooden ramp more designed for fishing boats than whitewater craft. However, Rich, with the assistance of Alan and others, devised a highly efficient system of hauling boats up the wooden ramp by rope – well done!
