Sunday Paddle - GW Canal - 10:00 @ Pennyfield
SUNDAY, 5/28 - GW Canal - Pennyfield @ 10:00
The Sunday paddle will again be the George Washington (GW)/Potowmack Canal. Since the C&O canal is not watered, we will set a shuttle at Pennyfield Lock. Meet at Pennyfield Lock Parking lot at 10:00 a.m. We will then convoy up to Riley's, rpt. Riley's Lock, where the parking is better and the put-in easier. The weather is projected to be in the mid to upper 60s and overcast. Chance of rain is less than 20%. The later start time will allow us to be out when it is warmer. The Little Falls Gauge is projected to be 3.3’ or around 4,500 cfs. So a low water run. We probably won’t stop for a full lunch, but folks can bring a snack and stop for a few minutes if they chose.
For those unfamiliar with the run, we will depart Riley’s and cross the Potomac (one mile) and turn into the remains of the GW/Potowmack canal. We will paddle down this (one mile) until we rejoin the river and then down a final mile to Pennyfield for a total of around three miles.
This is a Class I-II(-) trip. Boat control is essential. Life jackets are required. Helmets are strongly encouraged (mandatory for kayakers). Kayakers should have a skirt. If in doubt, contact the Trip Coordinator, Tim Tilson at hmslydia@msn.com. or Home Phone 703 273-9436
