Needles on New Year's Day, 1/1/2023
Ginny Quam

Lisa L. coordinated a picture perfect New Year’s Day paddle on the Needles. Joining her were Larry L., Alan G., John S., and Gary and Ginny Q. Most unusual, we had 4 OC-1s and 2 K-1s. We were able to put in at River Riders and take out at HFAC with prior coordination. A very good thing because Potoma Wayside was packed. Shepherdstown gage was 3.80 ft., 5310 cfs. Point of Rocks gage was 3.20 ft., 8450 cfs. Weather was spectacular for January 1st, sunny and close to, if not, 60. A water temp of 38 kept us in drysuits though. A fairly high water level made it a really fun day to play our way down river, finishing off with a bouncy Whitehorse. Lunch at the Potomac Street Grill in Brunswick was a delicious way to start the new year.
