Middle Antietam Creek -3.1'/350cfs
Lisa Weed

Six of us paddled the middle Antietam Creek section on a sunny spring day: MikiK, BarbB, CarrieS, RonS, JohnE, and me. The run was from Devil’s Backbone Park to Burnside Bridge (BSB); the level on the Sharpsburg gauge was 3.1ft, air temp 50F-60F for the duration, and no winds. We met at Devil’s Backbone at 10AM and set shuttle, finding enough parking for three of our vehicles at the take-out, about 100 yards downstream of BSB. Back at the put-in, the creek was dotted with fishermen plucking trout out of the chilly waters. We launched just upstream of the Devil’s bridge and ferried across to the deeper water that took us on our way. Beaver Ck came up soon on river left, followed by the small riffles, rapids, and ledges characteristic of this run. Ron spotted a hawk above, and we were escorted by mallards taking flight along the way. After about an hour and a half and four miles in, we lunched at Two Goose Islands, where we spotted an eagle’s nest. Onward, we passed the triple-arched Keedysville Bridge, the confluence of Li'l Antietam Creek, and the pretty waterfall on river right. We easily managed a couple of strainers along the way: about two miles in at a creek-wide ledge and the other, a downed tree just below the Li'l Antietam confluence. (Thanks for the pre-trip intelligence, GregM-P and MarkB.) Just about ten minutes past the fourth bridge we reached BSB, then the dam that gives that fun drop at Molly’s Hole. We found the take-out about 50 more yards downstream, at the rip-rap on river left. Most of us exited at the dirt bank before the rip-rap, with a couple using a rockier spot downstream where the rip-rap ends. It was a classic mid-Antietam run with excellent company and conditions. We agreed that an Upper Antietam run would provide more whitewater fun and might be considered in the future.
