GW Canal Loop - 9 August 2020
Author Last Post

We had 23 paddlers in 21 boats, split into three groups taking part in the traditional Sunday GW Canal paddle. The “Scouts”; Hendrik van Oss in OC1, Tom Panning and daughter Evelyn in OC2, Chuck Wilkins and son Charlie in OC2, Gus Anderson and Michael Halpern in K1’s, and Chad Dear on SUP, launching first, followed by the “Cruisers”; Wayne McDaniel, John Snitzer, and Tarik Ewassi and son Adam in K1’s, with Tim Tilson and Courtney Caldwell, who “we haven’t seen in years and years”, in OC1’s. And eventually the “Players”; Gordy Lang, Peter and Michelle Ryan, Darren Mould, Pam White, Sam Mazur, Mikey B. in K1’s, with Ginny and Gary Quam in OC1’s, took to the water.

With the LF Gauge reading 3.4’ and rising we were provided with some additional action, as well as enough water to allow one to skim over the rocks in Diagonal Rapid intentionally, or not. Along the way a swim or so occurred, nothing serious. The Scouts wasted no time, and arrived back at Violettes Lock by 11:00. Not so the Players, who managed to occupy themselves for a full 3 1/2 hours, and may have set a record number of elevator moves in the process. The Cruisers reported everyone did well, and had an enjoyable time on the river. John Snitzer gave a lesson on the life cycle of leaves, that garnered at least one rave review. Michelle and Peter Ryan provided the official turtle count of 22, thus proving CCA can put higher numbers on the water than the terrapins.
